At Wiveliscombe Primary School, British Values are an important part of preparing children to "be the best you can be" and to become confident, respectful and responsible members of modern Britain. 

We actively promote the five fundamental British Values of: 

• democracy
• rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect
• tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Rather than teaching these values in isolation, we bring them to life through our curriculum, assemblies, enrichment opportunities and the everyday experiences of school life. Our children are encouraged to understand what each value means, recognise them in action and consider how they can demonstrate them themselves. 

British Values in Action 

There are many opportunities for children to experience democracy and understand the importance of having a voice. Our Pupil Parliament gives children the opportunity to campaign, vote and represent their peers, while our Ballot Day and Polling Station experience helps children understand how democratic processes work in the wider world. Pupil voice is valued across the school, with children encouraged to share their ideas and contribute to decisions that affect school life.   

Children develop an understanding of rule of law through clear school expectations, discussions about rights and responsibilities and learning about why rules and laws are important. Visits and encounters with people working in Parliament, law, community services and other public roles help children make connections between their learning and life beyond school.

We promote individual liberty by encouraging children to make choices, express their views, develop their own interests and be increasingly independent. Children learn that with freedom comes responsibility and are supported to make safe and thoughtful choices. 

Mutual respect and tolerance are at the heart of our school community. Through RE, PSHE, assemblies and the wider curriculum, children learn about different faiths, beliefs, cultures, families and ways of life. They are encouraged to be curious, listen to different perspectives, challenge stereotypes and treat others with kindness and respect.

• Visits from outreach officers, our local MP and parliamentary candidates
• Opportunities to learn about careers in parliament, law, the legal sector and community services
• Volunteering opportunities and links with the local community

• Opportunities for pupil voice, leadership and decision-making across the school

Through these experiences, we want our children to understand why the British Values are important and to demonstrate them through the way they learn, behave and contribute to their school community.
